Description
Our Lady of Guadalupe (also Madonna of Guadalupe / Virgen de Guadalupe) appeared to an Indian named Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in 1531 on the outskirts of Mexico City. The beautiful woman, who appeared 4 times to the young man, described herself as "Mary, Mother of the one true God." The Lady of Guadalupe commissioned Juan Diego to ask the local bishop, to build a chapel on the hill of the apparitions. The bishop doubted the report until the young Indian had collected as a sign and proof in the middle of winter blooming flowers and brought them to him. As he spread the flowers on a coat, the miraculous image of Mary appeared to the Bishop as well, so he recognized the authenticity of publication. The Bishop of Mexico City therefore built a chapel, which was consecrated in 1709 as a basilica and later converted into a museum.
The place of pilgrimage Villa de Guadalupe is a section of Mexico City and is located on the hill of Tepeyac.
Pope John Paul II. set northern and southern America under the protection of Mary, and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe a prayer. He set 12th December as her commemoration day.
